BASELWORLD

Founded in 1931 by Louis Erard, the watch brand has enjoyed exceptional growth over the last five years. Re-launched with its original “1931” collection, it now offers six complete lines combining mechanical savoir-faire and beautiful workmanship at very reasonable prices. For BASELWORLD 2008, the mechanical watch manufacturer has dressed its favourite “1931” collection in chocolate tones and presents its very latest versions of the now celebrated “Carrée”.

THE SECRET OF ITS SUCCESS
Refined lines, elegance with both classical and contemporary features and, above all, the brand’s love of fine mechanics in the purest Swiss tradition.

For Louis Erard, the keystone has always been and will always be mechanical watches. The brand creates mechanical timepieces because they are animate, constant reminders that passing time is irretrievable. A mechanical watch is not a machine: it can be felt, and it moves and stops. Before putting it back on our wrist, we look at it, touch it and rewind it: a true rite of passage constantly repeated.

AN ECONOMIC REBIRTH
Since it was created in 1931, Louis Erard has had its fair share of ups and downs, even to the point of closing down at the beginning of the 1990’s. The brand was re-launched in 2003 by a group of investors led by Alain Spinedi. Their goal was perfectly clear: to produce high-quality mechanical watches at affordable prices. And time has shown how realistic that goal was, with annual production increasing from less than 1,000 in 2003 to more than 17,000 in 2007. There can be little doubt that the magician Louis Erard will continue to cast its spell even though, as Alain Spinedi recognises, “What is important to us is not so much any dramatic increase in production as safeguarding our freedom of choice and remaining faithful to our values.”

In the mountains of the Swiss Jura, the spirit of entrepreneurship co-exists with the spirit of time, a partnership deeply cherished by Louis Erard.

1931: a taste of chocolate

1931: the year the very first Louis Erard watch appeared on the market. Almost eighty years on, the 1931 remains crucial to the Erard brand as it embodies High Horlogerie at affordable prices: the finest movements, classic yet contemporary models, and very attractive prices. This very appealing formula has now inspired the watchmaker to offer its legendary 1931 Collection in a new colour: chocolate.

Meeting today’s trend for browns, Louis Erard is offering a range of watches in its benchmark collection that are both masculine and harmonious. These warm tones appear on a delicate moon phase, a second time zone with large date, a small seconds and on the counters of a powerful chronograph.

Lovers of chocolate, of course, might prefer the model with a skeleton dial revealing the sumptuous movement beating at its heart: dynamic discs, interlocking and sequential components, and a pulsating movement on the wrist.

These are rare and precious models. The seconds tick away, reminding us of the inexorable passing of time. An evocation of the imperceptible moment in all its intensity. And yet there is also a sensation of movement, a powerful awareness of being part of history: therein lies the whole secret of the 1931 Collection.

The Carrée: a watch of character

Created in 2004, the Carrée has already made a major impact…especially on those with strong, assertive characters. The Carrée has now returned to centre stage, trendier than ever!

Popular with men wanting to display their masculinity, its even more generous dimensions house a large-sized movement. Powerful and virile, it is less classic than in the past.

Sporty types will definitely appreciate the chronograph version, with its brushed steel case and a dial displaying very trendy red chronograph hands: a real jewel of a watch, elegant and 100% sport-chic!

Although the majority of Louis Erard timepieces are distinctively masculine, it has certainly not forgotten the ladies. Active and modern, today’s women express a strong taste for mechanical pieces, so they will definitely appreciate the sumptuous “Carrée Date Ladies” with its powerful, sleek case. The mark of a strong personality!
