Véritable artiste, François-Paul Journe explore la mesure du temps avec créativité et c’est en technicien exigeant qu’il innove et conçoit des mécaniques horlogères exclusives. Dès son plus jeune âge, l’horlogerie fait partie intégrante de sa vie.

C’est à Marseille sa ville natale, qu’il entame à l’âge de quatorze ans, ses études à l’Ecole d’horlogerie. Peu à peu, il découvre l’univers vaste et riche des sciences horlogères qui sauront satisfaire sa curiosité et sa vitalité créatrice. Il aura cependant la véritable révélation de sa vocation à Paris où il termine ses études avant d’être formé par son oncle. L’atelier de cet éminent restaurateur d’horlogerie ancienne est niché au coeur du quartier des artisans à Saint-Germain-des-Prés où une clientèle de qualité lui confie les plus belles collections. François-Paul Journe y découvre avec ravissement, les réalisations les plus marquantes de l’histoire de l’horlogerie et se plait à refaire le cheminement intellectuel et philosophique de leurs concepteurs: hommes de sciences, inventeurs ou maîtres horlogers. Il pénètre dans les coeurs mécaniques de pièces d’exception, qui n’auront de cesse de faire battre le sien! Le jeune horloger découvre émerveillé, ce qu’il confirme encore aujourd’hui, être “l’âge d’or de l’horlogerie”: le 18e siècle. Abraham-Louis Breguet, Antide Janvier et quelques autres talentueux maîtres du temps lui offrent ses premières émotions. Fasciné par ce que ces hommes avaient pu réaliser avec les moyens dont ils disposaient, il entame la construction de sa première montre de poche à tourbillon à l’âge de vingt ans.

Il offre tout son temps à une passion, qui deviendra sa plus fidèle compagne. Son besoin d’indépendance le pousse à ouvrir son atelier d’horlogerie à la rue de Verneuil où il reçoit la visite de collectionneurs avertis qui font appel à lui pour la réalisation de pièces
uniques. Il saura rendre hommage à l’histoire de l’horlogerie en poursuivant la recherche et en créant des pièces dont l’authenticité et les innovations techniques respecte l’éthique des grands maîtres.

Les plus grands prix horlogers à travers le monde lui sont décernés et le confortent dans le travail et les recherches qu’il effectue en solitaire. Bientôt les grands noms du luxe et de la scène horlogère le sollicitent pour le développement et la réalisation de calibres
novateurs. Ainsi il conçoit et réalise: pendules mystérieuses, pendules sympathiques et mécanismes subtils pour des objets uniques.
Une demande croissante le motive à créer en Suisse, une manufacture pour la conception de mouvements destinés aux marques. Il met alors au service de l’industrie, ses connaissances historiques et techniques d’horloger-constructeur.

Son désir intime est cependant de pouvoir un jour proposer à un public plus large, des garde-temps contemporains dont l’interprétation technique pourrait se targuer d’être authentiquement novatrice.

Chacune des pièces uniques que François-Paul Journe inventait, était le fruit d’un travail de recherches, qu’il voyait disparaître lorsque le commanditaire prenait possession de sa montre. Il se mit alors à rêver d’une collection de montres offrant les mêmes qualités (confort, innovations et performances) mais pour un plus large public!

En 1994, François-Paul Journe mis sur papier sa vision de l’horlogerie contemporaine et présenta en 1999 sa collection de chronomètres signés F.P.Journe -Invenit et Fecit- en latin, inventé et fait. Il du adapter son savoir-faire de façonneur sur mesure au processus d’industrialisation et décortiquer les mouvements qu’il inventait, afin que chacun de leurs composants puisse êtres fabriqués selon ses propres exigences. Sa démarche inventive, intellectuelle et créatrice reste identique que lorsqu’il était artisan, seule la mise en forme
change considérablement, avec plus d’intervenants.

Son intégrité, dans la réalisation de pièces novatrices, l’impose naturellement comme le lien entre l’âge d’or des sciences horlogères et l’horlogerie contemporaine. Ses créations s’imposeront bientôt, arborant le statut de première mondiale grâce à leur conception
technique originale et performante.

François-Paul Journe perpétue la longue histoire de l’horlogerie et rend hommage au Siècle des Lumières, en prolongeant les recherches les plus déterminantes de cette science et de cet artisanat unique qu’est la mesure du temps. Il devient le lien subtil entre l’horlogerie d’hier et celle de demain.

Les chronomètres F.P.Journe -Invenit et Fecit- possèdent une identité esthétique unique. Ils sont le reflet d'une nouvelle vision de l'horlogerie contemporaine. Leur concepteur, maître horloger avant tout, voulait des montres simples, complices, mais néanmoins spectaculaires, de forme ronde car elles sont garantes de la meilleure utilisation de l’espace.

L’excellence est l’essence même d’une montre F.P.Journe autant que le sont l’authenticité, et la chronométrie, c’est pourquoi le boîtier de chacune des créations horlogères est réalisé uniquement dans deux des métaux les plus précieux au monde, l’or rose 18ct et le platine. L'essentiel se trouve au coeur même de ses mouvements d’exception, c’est pourquoi F.P.Journe est la seule Manufacture au monde à réaliser ses mouvements exclusivement en or rose 18ct.

François-Paul Journe voulait cependant que ses chronomètres offrent au premier coup d'oeil, les informations indispensables. Avec un système déposé, les cadrans des heures, minutes et secondes en argent guilloché, sont vissés sur la partie droite de la face de la montre afin de permettre une lecture élégante, discrète et efficace.

On ne sera pas étonné de découvrir que l'équipe des horlogers chez F.P.Journe possède une motivation commune: le retour au travail d'horloger à part entière. Dans une industrie de plus en plus segmentée, ils ont rarement la chance de réaliser une montre intégralement et encore moins d'en suivre sa destinée.

Dans les ateliers de François-Paul Journe, les horlogers qui ont choisi de le suivre, sont tous animés par une même ambition: se former sur de nouveaux calibres, exclusifs et techniquement novateurs. Sachant que d'autres nouveautés sont à venir et que les défis techniques et d'apprentissage seront leur quotidien.

Chaque horloger est appointé à la réalisation d'un modèle spécifique, selon ses affinités professionnelles et surtout sa sensibilité de technicien. Il aura pour mission de réaliser toutes les étapes du montage de la montre: celui du mouvement exclusif F.P.Journe, son
réglage, souvent délicat, l'emboîtage et le contrôle de la pièce, avant qu'il la soumette au maître des lieux pour ultime vérification. Tel un cardiologue, l'horloger connaîtra les moindres réactions et caprices du mouvement, si spécifiques aux montres mécaniques.

En "parrain", considérant que le père est le concepteur, il deviendra responsable de sa pièce pour le temps qui suivra sa vente, soit la période de garantie.

Elle est située dans un immeuble classé datant de 1892, au coeur de Genève, dans le quartier de Plainpalais, devenu le haut lieu de l’art contemporain. C’est là, sur 2000m2 répartis sur 4 niveaux, qu’horlogers, ingénieurs, dessinateurs de recherche et développement, mécaniciens de précision, polisseurs et angleurs, produisent 95% des composants nécessaires à la fabrication des chronomètres de précision F.P.Journe, dans le respect et l’authenticité des traditions de la haute horlogerie.

Avec une production annuelle de près de 900 pièces par année, la Manufacture F.P.Journe fait honneur au retour du travail d’horloger à part entière, offrant à chacun la responsabilité de l’assemblage intégral d’une montre, et la chance travailler sur de nouveaux calibres exclusifs.

François-Paul Journe est l’un des rares professionnels de l’industrie horlogère suisse à concevoir seul des montres d’une extrême complexité, et de gérer également leur distribution à travers le monde. Dans sa Manufacture, il est le maître horloger et cela lui assure une véritable légitimité.

It is with an artist’s sensitivity that François-Paul Journe explores the measurement of time with a unique sense of creativity and innovation. As a demanding technician, he innovates by devising exclusive watch mechanisms. From his earliest years, watchmaking has been an integral part of his life.

It was in his native city of Marseille that he began training at the watchmaker’s school at the age of fourteen. Little by little, he discovered the scope and wealth of horological science, which would prove capable of satisfying both his curiosity and his creative vitality. However, the full revelation of his vocation came in Paris where he completed his studies before training with his uncle. The workshop of this eminent antique watch and clock restorer was located at the heart of the craftsmen’s district in Saint-Germain-des- Prés and a first-rate clientele entrusted him with the finest collections. It was here that François-Paul Journe thrilled to the discovery of the most striking achievements in the history of watchmaking and retraced the intellectual and philosophical paths taken by those who had conceived and crafted them: scientists, inventors or master-watchmakers.

He experienced the privilege of entering the mechanical heart of some exceptional creations that were to set his own heart beating for years to come! The youthful watchmaker explored what he still views as “the golden age of watchmaking”: the 18th century. Abraham-Louis Breguet, Antide Janvier and some other talented masters of time triggered his first deep-felt horological emotions. Fascinated by
what these men were able to accomplish with the means at their disposal, he began the construction of his first tourbillon pocket-watch at the age of twenty. His need for independence led him to set up his craftsman’s workshop on the rue de Verneuil, where he received visits from a select circle of informed collectors who commissioned him with making some one-of-a-kind creations. He will know how to pay homage to the watchmaking history in pursuing the research, creating timekeepers from which authenticity and technical innovations are respecting the ethics of these great masters.

The many watch awards from around the world he received encouraged him in his singlehanded task of research and development. Quite soon the great names in the world of luxury and watchmaking called upon his talents to develop and create innovative movements. He designed and crafted mysterious clocks, the “sympathique” clock, and subtle mechanisms for unique creations.

Increasing demand emanating from Switzerland led him to develop a Manufacture dedicated to building movements for various brands. He thereby placed his historical and technical knowledge as a watchmaking design-engineer in the service of industry.

Nonetheless, his secret desire remained to be able to offer contemporary timekeepers, based on a technical interpretation that could rightly claim to be both authentic and innovative, to a broader public. Each of the unique pieces François-Paul Journe was creating was the result of countless hours of research, that he saw disappearing when the commissioner took up his watch. He then began dreaming about a collection of watches offering the same qualities - comfort, innovations and performances - but for a wider public!

In 1994, François-Paul Journe started designing his vision of contemporary watchmaking and presented in 1999, a collection of wristwatches signed F.P.Journe with the Latin wording – Invenit et Fecit –, meaning “invented and made”. It thereby certifies that each
of the watches carrying his name results from an entirely original conception and rigorous craftsmanship.

His creative, intellectual and inventive thought process remains identical that when he was a craftsman, only the shaping changes considerably, with more contributors. His integrity in the creation of innovative timepieces imposes him naturally as the link between the golden age of horological science and contemporary watchmaking. His creations have quickly imposed with the status of World Premiere, thanks to their unique conception, their originality and their technical performance.

François-Paul Journe perpetuates the long history of watchmaking and pays tribute to the Age of Enlightenment, by pursuing and extending the most decisive research in the unique science and craft represented by the measurement of time.

Chronometers by F.P.Journe -Invenit et Fecit- possess a powerful aesthetic identity. They reflect a new vision of contemporary watchmaking. Their designer, who is above all a master-watchmaker, wanted simple, companionable yet spectacular watches of round

The essential is housed within the very heart of his exclusive movements realised exclusively in 18K rose gold. A first in the watch world.
François-Paul Journe wanted his chronometers to provide the indispensable information at first glance. The “guilloche” silver hour and minute dials are screwed by means of a patented system to the right-hand side of the 18K gold watch face for discreet read-off.

The team of F.P.Journe watchmakers is driven by a shared motivation: a return to a fullfledged watchmaker's work. In an increasingly segmented industry, few watchmakers have the opportunity to create a watch from start to finish and even less are able to follow its destiny.

In the workshops of François-Paul Journe, the watchmakers who have chosen to associate with him are all inspired by a common purpose: to pursue their training and hone their skills by working with new, exclusive and technically innovative calibres. All are keenly aware that more new introductions will be forthcoming and that technical challenges and learning experiences will be their daily lot. Each watchmaker is
responsible for making a specific watch, according to his professional affinities and above all his technical sensitivity. His mission will be to perform all stages in assembling the watch: fitting the exclusive F.P.Journe movement, the often delicate rating process, casing-up and testing before submitting it to the "master" for an ultimate check.

Much like a cardiologist, a watchmaker becomes acquainted with the slightest reactions and vagaries of the mechanism which are so inherent in mechanical watches. Somewhat like a "godfather", if one considers the design-engineer as the father, he becomes responsible for each watch for the guarantee period following purchase. Each stage is carefully recorded and enables a precise review of all the watchmaker's gestures.

It is a real privilege for these passionately dedicated watchmakers to follow the career of the watches they make. Each of them carries with it the secret of the number of hours the watchmaker has spent with it and thus acquires a unique dimension. It is imbued with the sense of companionship of which only its "godfather" can bring back the memories when meeting it at a later date. If necessary, he will find the means to restore his “protégé” to its initial radiance and ensure that its heart is as young as when they first parted !

Journe’s watch Manufacture is located in the centre of Geneva in the Plainpalais district which has become the hub of contemporary Art. In this historical building dating 1892, on a 2000m2 site, watchmakers, engineers, research and development designers, precision mechanics, polishers and bevellers, are producing 95% of the components of the F.P.Journe precision chronometers in the grand horological tradition.
The F.P. Journe Manufacture prides itself in the return to a genuine watchmaker’s Art. Each watchmaker is responsible for making a specific watch, according to his technical sensitivity, and performing all production stages from beginning to end, including the delicate rating process, casing-up and testing.
