Depuis 1655, le nom de Badollet est intimement lié à l’histoire de l’horlogerie genevoise. Cette dynastie d’horlogers a été active, génération après génération, depuis le XVIIe siècle. Elle a traversé sans interruption toute l’évolution de cet art séculaire, de l’horloge à la montre-bracelet.

Ce n’est pourtant pas un simple horloger que l’histoire retient comme le premier de la branche familiale la plus longue à avoir voué ses efforts à cet art aux aspects si divers. Curieux, intéressé par toute forme de connaissances et passionné d’horlogerie dès qu’il s’y adonne à l’âge de vingt ans, Jean Badollet (1635-1718), par ailleurs pasteur et régent au Collège, publie en 1689 un ouvrage intitulé L’excellence de l’horlogerie ou Petit Traité où l’on fait voir son Antiquité, ses Fondements, sa Nécessité et ses Curiosités. Il y mêle recherches historiques, théories astronomiques et exposés techniques, assortis de dessins explicatifs sur les différents types de pendules, de mouvements, de cadrans et de cylindres ainsi que d’autres « montres curieuses ». C’est en véritable érudit qu’il se fait le chantre de la beauté et de la noblesse de l’activité horlogère.

Jean Badollet a transmis sa passion pour l’horlogerie à ses six fils, à un moment où Genève connaît une grave crise économique. La famille Badollet entre alors en force - et pour ne plus le quitter - dans le milieu de la « Fabrique » qui, à Genève, regroupe tous les métiers
de l’horlogerie et de la bijouterie.

A la fin du 18e siècle, l’un de ses descendants directs, Jean-Jacques Badollet (1756-1843), travaille même pour Abraham-Louis Breguet. Etabli à Paris, celui-ci lui commande régulièrement des ébauches, des finissages, voire des « montres de commerce ».

Et c’est au fils de Jean-Jaques, Jean-Moïse (1811-1862), que l’on doit la création de la société Jean-Moïse Badollet & Cie, dont la raison sociale survivra longtemps à son décès prématuré en 1862, grâce aux efforts de sa veuve et de ses fils. Etabli d’abord à Londres en 1837, après un séjour en Sicile et des voyages à l’étranger, il y avait en effet entrepris la fabrication de montres destinées à être exportées dans divers pays. Puis il s’y était associé en 1854 avec un de ses compatriotes, Gustave Huguenin, auquel il avait confié la maison de Londres, cependant qu’il regagnait sa ville natale, où il dirigea l’entreprise familiale tout en assumant des fonctions importantes dans le monde de l’économie et de la politique.

Vingt ans plus tard, l’entreprise créée en 1854 poursuit ses activités dans le commerce et la fabrication de l’horlogerie et de la bijouterie. Le fils aîné de Jean-Moïse, Jean-Jacques Badollet (1850-1908) est très engagé dans les affaires aux côtés de sa mère. A partir de 1872, les chronomètres Badollet sont régulièrement primés lors des concours de réglage de l’Observatoire de Genève ; puis ce sont les médailles et
diplômes d’honneur remportés aux expositions internationales de Vienne (1873), Philadelphie (1876), Paris (1878 et 1879) Groningue (1879), Graz (1880) et Melbourne (1881). Le catalogue officiel de l’Exposition internationale de machines et d’outils, qui se tient en 1880 à Genève, évoque ainsi ses activités : « En dehors de la fabrication mécanique régulière, la maison J.-M. Badollet & Cie s’est fait une réputation pour son horlogerie compliquée et de précision ; les succès obtenus dans les concours annuels institués par la Classe d’industrie de la Société des Arts,
témoignent de la marche supérieure de ses chronomètres ».

En 1881, Jean-Jaques crée sa propre société J.-J. Badollet & Cie, laquelle a pour but la fabrication, l’achat et la vente de l’horlogerie et des parties qui s’y rattachent : elle fonctionnera parallèlement à la maison familiale J.-M. Badollet & Cie qui s’était installée depuis 1862 au 14 de la rue du Stand.

Evénement marquant : après avoir remporté un concours auquel avaient pris part seize fabricants de Genève, cette nouvelle société reçoit l’adjudication pour la fourniture de la montre officielle du Tir fédéral de 1887!

Le décès de la veuve de Jean-Moïse en 1890 intervient en pleine période de crise économique. Jean-Jaques ne baisse toutefois pas les bras. Tandis que son frère Gustave se charge du magasin familial où vont être écoulés les stocks de montres, il fonde – au moment du renouvellement de sa société - sa nouvelle Société Anonyme de la Fabrique d’horlogerie, en 1891. Il relève alors le défi américain des montres simples et bon marché avec ses « Montres Charmilles » non magnétiques, brevetées dans le monde entier et produites en série dans l’usine moderne qu’il a construite à Genève, rue de la Dôle.

Active sans interruption depuis 1655, la dynastie horlogère Badollet s’éteint en 1924 à la mort de Gustave, dernier représentant d’une famille genevoise ayant traversé avec panache toute l’histoire de l’horlogerie, de l’horloge à la montre-

La fonctionnalité n’est pas perçue comme une quête du tape-à-l’oeil et de l’ostentatoire, mais elle est réfléchie et conçue pour répondre véritablement aux besoins du porteur et lui proposer une utilisation aisée. « Dans leur grande majorité, les fonctions à développer pour la montre mécanique existent déjà. Mais elles peuvent - et doivent - être grandement améliorées pour les rendre plus agréables, plus intéressantes et plus innovantes aux yeux du porteur », insiste-t-on chez Badollet.

La première collection compte des montres-bracelets (une dizaine de références) et un Objet du temps. Les montres-bracelets révèlent deux réflexions esthétiques, l’une classique, reprenant les codes de la montre de poche, l’autre plus contemporaine. Des mouvements de haute horlogerie à la finition exemplaire viennent faire battre ces nouveaux Instruments du Temps.
A terme, l’acquéreur aura la possibilité de personnaliser son garde-temps. Le futur détenteur pourra ainsi, prochainement, participer au projet dès sa création en suivant les diverses étapes de conception et en y apportant des modifications selon ses désirs, tout en respectant l’esprit des Instruments du Temps Badollet.

Enfin le goût du luxe parfait ne serait pas, si les créateurs de la nouvelle marque n’accordaient pas autant d’importance au produit qu’à son environnement. Since 1655, the name of Badollet has been inextricably entwined with the history of watchmaking in Geneva. Successive generations of this watchmaking dynasty were active since the 17th century, keeping constant and unbroken step with the evolution of this time-honoured art –from the clock through to the wristwatch.

The first figure in the branch of the family that was to devote the most longstanding efforts to this infinitely varied art is remembered by historians as far more than just a watchmaker. Endowed with a curious nature that led him to take an interest in all forms of knowledge, and fascinated by horology as soon as he began practising it at the age of 20, the multi-talented Jean Badollet (1635-1718) was also a pastor and a school headmaster. In 1689, he published a work entitled L’Excellence de l’horlogerie ou Petit Traité où l’on fait voir son Antiquité, ses Fondements, sa Nécessité et ses Curiosités. This learned book featured a blend of historical research, astronomical theories and technical accounts, along with explanatory drawings of various types of clocks, movements, dials and cylinders, as well as other “curious watches”. This authentic scholar thus eloquently sang the praises of the beauty and nobility of fine horology.

Jean Badollet passed on his passion for watchmaking to his six sons, at a time when Geneva was undergoing a serious economic crisis. The Badollet family made a noteworthy and definitive entrance into the Fabrique in Geneva, the prestigious local institution encompassing all the watch and jewellery-making professions.

At the end of the 18th century, one of the founder’s direct descendants, Jean-Jacques Badollet (1756-1843), regularly supplied movement blanks, gear-trains or even “commercial watches” to Abraham-Louis Breguet, who had set up his workshops in Paris.

It is to Jean-Jacques’ son Jean-Moïse (1811-1862) that we owe the establishment of Jean-Moïse Badollet & Cie, a company name that survived well after his premature death in 1862, thanks to the efforts of his widow and his sons. Having initially settled in London in 1837, after spending time in Sicily and various trips abroad, he had undertaken to produce watches there intended for export to different countries. In 1854, he joined forces with one of his fellow countrymen Gustave Huguenin, to whom he entrusted the firm in London upon his return to his native city where he ran the family business while also playing an important role in the economic and political arena.

Twenty years later, the company created in 1854 was pursuing its activities in the sale and production of watchmaking and jewellery. The eldest son of Jean-Moïse, Jean-Jacques Badollet (1850-1908), was actively involved in the business alongside his mother. From 1872 onwards, Badollet chronometers won a string of awards in the chronometry competitions staged by the Geneva Observatory, as well as medals and honorary diplomas at the international expositions in Vienna (1873), Philadelphia (1876), Paris (1878 and 1879), Groningen (1879), Graz (1880) and Melbourne (1881). The official catalogue of the International Machine and Tool Exhibition held in Geneva in 1880 speaks of the company’s activities in these terms: “In addition to standard mechanical production, J.-M. Badollet & Cie has earned a fine reputation for its complicated precision watchmaking: the successes achieved in the annual competitions organised by the Industrial Class of the Société des Arts testify to the superior rating of its chronometers”.

In 1881, Jean-Jacques created his own firm named J.-J. Badollet & Cie, devoted to the production, purchase and sale of watchmaking and related parts: it was to operate in parallel with the J.-M. Badollet & Cie. family business that had been located since 1862 at no. 14, Rue du Stand.
One major milestone followed shortly thereafter: after winning a competition in which sixteen Genevan watch companies had taken part, the new company was selected as official supplier of the 1887 Tir Fédéral (Swiss national shooting competition)!

Even after his mother’s death in 1890, coinciding with a period of severe economic crisis, Jean-Jacques did not give up the struggle. While his brother Gustave took charge of the family store where the stocks of watches were to be sold, he personally founded (when it came time to renew his firm) the new Société Anonyme de la Fabrique d’horlogerie in 1891. He decided to meet head on the challenge from the American manufacturers, who were producing simple and inexpensive watches, with the antimagnetic “Charmilles” watches that were patented worldwide and series-produced in the modern factory in the Rue de Dôle, Geneva.

After almost three centuries of uninterrupted activity since 1655, the Badollet watch dynasty died out in 1924 upon the demise of Gustave, the last representative of a Genevan family that had found its way in style through the entire history of horology, from the clock to the wristwatch.

Respecting the past while transcending it to offer truly innovative “Instruments of Time”: such is the fundamental principle guiding the development of all Badollet timepieces – including some very unexpected ones.

The Badollet dynasty’s contribution to horological know-how – over a period stretching unbroken from the clock to the wristwatch – places the brand’s current determination to explore new horizons and to develop all types of timepieces within its true historical perspective.

Representing far more than just watches, the objects created by Badollet truly deserve to
be called “Instruments of Time”.
The “Instrument”, of which the primary functions must be clearly apparent and easy to use, carries two-fold connotations of technical sophistication and reliable functionality. Badollet revisits technical aspects by highlighting the sophistication of various systems, by
reinforcing the durability of the various components, and by giving top priority to consumers’ needs rather than merely to the product performance.
Functionality is not perceived as a quest for showy, ostentatious pieces, but is instead carefully thought out and designed to meet the owner’s actual needs and to ensure userfriendliness. As Badollet emphasises: “Almost all of the functions to be developed for the mechanical watch already exist. But they can and must be vastly improved in order to make them more pleasant, more interesting and more innovative from the wearer’s standpoint”.

The first collection comprises wristwatches (around ten models) and an Object of time. The wristwatches embody two forms of aesthetic inspiration: a more classic one reflecting the codes of the pocket-watch, and another more contemporary one. These new Instruments of Time are driven by impeccably finished Haute Horlogerie movements. In due course, purchasers will be able to personalise their timepiece. Future owners will indeed have the opportunity to take part in a watch project right from its creation, following the various stages in development and requesting modifications as they so wish – while respecting the spirit of the Badollet Instruments of Time.

Finally, the taste for perfect luxury would not be complete if the new brand did not consider both the product and its environment to be of equal importance. Creating an intimate setting for the Instrument of Time, enabling it to reveal its full splendour by presenting it like the rarest and most precious collector’s item: such are the conditions in which the Badollet spirit can express its very essence.

Seit 1655 ist der Name Badollet ein fester Bestandteil der Genfer Uhrmachergeschichte. Über viele Generationen hinweg war diese
Uhrmacherdynastie ab dem 17. Jahrhundert ununterbrochen aktiv und prägte die Entwicklung dieser jahrhundertealten Handwerkskunst von der Grossuhr bis zur Armbanduhr.

Der erste Vorfahre dieser Familie, die sich über Jahrhunderte hinweg mit Leib und Seele dieser unendlich vielfältigen Kunst widmete, ging wahrlich nicht nur als einfacher Uhrmacher in die Annalen ein. Jean Badollet (1635-1718) war ein wissbegieriger Mensch, der bereits im Alter von 20 Jahren seine Leidenschaft für die Uhrmacherei entdeckte. Neben seinem Amt als Pastor und Mittelschullehrer veröffentlichte er 1689 ein Werk mit dem Titel L’excellence de l’horlogerie ou Petit Traité où l’on fait voir son Antiquité, ses Fondements, sa Nécessité et ses Curiosités. Es handelte sich um eine Abfolge historischer Recherchen, astronomischer Theorien, technischer Darstellungen sowie erklärender Zeichnungen über verschiedene Arten von Pendulen, Uhrwerken, Zifferblättern, Zylindern sowie anderen «kuriosen Uhren». Dieses Zeugnis aussergewöhnlicher Fachkundigkeit war eine Hymne an die Schönheit und Noblesse der Uhrmacherei.

Jean Badollet legte seinen sechs Söhnen die Leidenschaft für die Uhrmacherei mit in die Wiege. In der damaligen Zeit erlebte Genf eine der schwersten Wirtschaftskrisen. Die Familie Badollet wurde – und blieb – geschlossen in der «Fabrique» tätig, der prestigeträchtigen Genfer Institution, die alle Berufe der Uhrmacherei und Juwelierskunst umfasste.

Gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts arbeitete einer der direkten Nachfahren sogar für Abraham-Louis Breguet, der sein Geschäft in Paris eröffnet hatte und bei Jean-Jacques Badollet (1756-1843) regelmässig Rohlinge, Vollendungen sowie so genannte «Handelsuhren» bestellte.

Die Gründung des Unternehmens Jean-Moïse Badollet & Cie erfolgte durch Jean-Jacques' Sohn Jean-Moïse (1811-1862). Dank der Bemühungen seiner Witwe und seiner Söhne überlebte dieser Firmenname den 1862 frühzeitig verstorbenen Gründer um viele Jahre. Er liess sich 1837 zuerst in London nieder und begann dort nach einem Aufenthalt in Sizilien und Reisen ins Ausland mit der Fertigung von für den Export in verschiedene Länder bestimmten Uhren. 1854 schloss er sich mit seinem Landsmann Gustave Huguenin zusammen, dem er die Führung des Hauses in London überliess, als er selbst in seine Heimatstadt zurückkehrte, um dort das Familienunternehmen zu leiten und auch in der lokalen Wirtschaft und Politik eine tragende Rolle zu spielen.

20 Jahre später war das 1854 gegründete Unternehmen immer noch im Handel und in der Herstellung von Uhren und Schmuck tätig. Der älteste Sohn von Jean-Moïse, Jean-Jacques Badollet (1850-1908), unterstützte seine Mutter tatkräftig im Geschäft. Ab 1872 wurden die Badollet-Chronometer bei den Ganggenauigkeitswettbewerben des Observatoriums Genf regelmässig ausgezeichnet. Auf internationalen Ausstellungen folgten Medaillen und Ehrendiplome: Wien (1873), Philadelphia (1876), Paris (1878 und 1879), Groningen (1879), Graz (1880) und Melbourne (1881). Im offiziellen Katalog der Internationalen Maschinen- und Werkzeugausstellung von 1880 in Genf wurde die Geschäftstätigkeit des
Unternehmens wie folgt beschrieben: «Neben der regulären Herstellung mechanischer Uhren hat sich das Haus J.-M. Badollet & Cie für seine komplizierte und präzise Uhrmacherei einen guten Ruf erworben; die bei den jährlichen Wettbewerben der Classe d'Industrie der Société des Arts erzielten Erfolge zeugen von der hochwertigen Ganggenauigkeit seiner Zeitmesser.»

1881 gründete Jean-Jacques sein eigenes Unternehmen J.-J. Badollet & Cie für die Herstellung sowie den An- und Verkauf von Uhren und deren Bestandteilen: Sein Unternehmen lief parallel zum Familienunternehmen J.-M. Badollet & Cie, das seit 1862 in der Rue du Stand 14 angesiedelt war.
Kurze Zeit später fand ein herausragendes Ereignis statt: Nach dem Gewinn einer Ausschreibung, an dem 16 Genfer Hersteller teilgenommen hatten, wurde das neue Unternehmen zum Lieferanten der offiziellen Uhr für das Eidgenössische Schützenfest 1887 ernannt!

Auch als seine Mutter 1890 mitten in einer weiteren Wirtschaftskrise verstarb, gab Jean-Jacques den Kampf nicht auf. Während sein Bruder Gustave das Familiengeschäft übernahm und dort die Uhrenbestände verkaufte, gründete er 1891 - zum Zeitpunkt der Erneuerung seines Unternehmens - seine neue Société Anonyme de la Fabrique d’horlogerie. Mit seinen unmagnetischen, durch ein weltweites Patent geschützten
«Montres Charmilles», die er in seiner modernen Fabrik in der Rue de la Dôle in Genf in Serie produzierte, bot er der amerikanischen Konkurrenz mit ihren einfachen und günstigen Uhren die Stirn.

Die seit 1655 fast drei Jahrhunderte lang ununterbrochen aktive Uhrmacherdynastie Badollet starb 1924 mit dem Tod von Gustave aus. Er war der letzte Vertreter dieser Genfer Familie, die die gesamte Uhrmachergeschichte von der Grossuhr bis zur Armbanduhr massgeblich mitprägte.

Für die Kreation wahrhaft innovativer Zeitinstrumente lautet das oberste Gebot bei der Entwicklung aller Zeitmesser von Badollet : die Vergangenheit ehren und übertreffen. Das Ergebnis ist oft verblüffend ...

Der aktuelle Wunsch der Marke, neue Horizonte zu ergründen und unterschiedlichste Zeitmesser zu entwickeln, ist nur natürlich, weil die Dynastie Badollet von der Grossuhr bis zur Armbanduhr massgeblich zum uhrmacherischen Können beigetragen hat.

Die von Badollet entworfenen Objekte sind mehr als nur Uhren und verdienen deshalb den Namen «Zeitinstrumente».
Ein «Instrument» verfügt über eindeutige sowie leicht nutzbare Funktionen und steht für Technizität und Funktionalität.
Badollet entwickelt eine neue Form der Technizität, bei der ausgeklügelte Systeme sowie Langlebigkeit der Bestandteile im Vordergrund stehen und die Bedürfnisse des Konsumenten höher bewertet werden als die pure Leistungskraft des Produkts. Die Funktionalität wird nicht als Streben nach Effekthascherei oder Protz verstanden, sondern ist vielmehr wohl durchdacht, um tatsächlich auf die Bedürfnisse des Trägers einzugehen, und extrem benutzerfreundlich konzipiert. «Fast alle für mechanische Uhren denkbaren Funktionen gibt es bereits. Sie können und müssen aber unbedingt deutlich verbessert werden, um sie für den Träger angenehmer, interessanter und innovativer zu gestalten», wird bei Badollet betont.

Die erste Kollektion besteht aus Armbanduhren (rund ein Dutzend Referenzen) sowie einem Zeitobjekt. Die Armbanduhren zeugen von zwei ästhetischen Ansätzen: einem klassischen Design, das den Regeln der Taschenuhr gehorcht, sowie ein zeitgenössischeres Design. Werke höchster Uhrmacherkunst mit beispielhafter Vollendung erwecken diese neuen Zeitinstrumente zum Leben.
Bald können Käufer ihre Zeitmesser persönlich gestalten lassen. Der zukünftige Besitzer wird dann ab Projektbeginn in die einzelnen Entwicklungsstufen miteinbezogen und kann mit der Philosophie der Zeitinstrumente von Badollet übereinstimmende, persönliche Veränderungen vornehmen.

Die Schöpfer der neuen Marke messen dem Umfeld eine ebenso grosse Bedeutung bei wie dem Produkt selbst – schliesslich wäre der Luxus sonst nicht perfekt. In die Badollet-Philosophie übersetzt heisst dies: Aufbau einer echten Intimsphäre rund um das Zeitinstrument, damit es seine volle Pracht entfalten und sich als ein Sammlerobjekt von grösstem Seltenheitswert und erlesenem Prestige präsentieren kann.
