Le créateur Cabestan est à l’image de son créateur Jean-François Ruchonnet : différente, extrême, hors du commun. Et surtout provocante.
Surnommé par certains le « Bad Boy » de la haute horlogerie, décrit par d’autres comme un génie en matière de créativité horlogère, Jean-François Ruchonnet n’hésite pas à bousculer les convenances. Une chose est sûre : l’homme ne laisse personne indifférent.
Rebelle, esthète, attiré par la belle mécanique, Jean-François Ruchonnet est un véritable hyperactif de la création. Un tempérament qui le pousse à toujours aller au bout de ses envies. Amateur de sports extrêmes, il n’hésite pas à devenir pilote d’avion, mais aussi coureur automobile pour une écurie de voitures Radicales (250 km/heure sur des circuits légendaires tels que Spa, Silverstone ou encore Nürburgring). Cette passion pour la mécanique se trouve au coeur de son travail, qu’il met au service des plus grandes Maisons horlogères pendant vingt-cinq ans.
En 2004, son besoin incessant d’innover l’amène à concevoir une montre librement inspirée de la pure mécanique. Le concept s’élabore autour d’une trilogie englobant la course automobile, le monde de la voile et la rigueur technologique de l’univers aérien. Bientôt, une idée germe dans l’esprit bouillonnant de Jean-François Ruchonnet : celle de réaliser une oeuvre d’art mécanique, réservés aux grands collectionneurs, véritables experts en très haute horlogerie. Le luxe absolu.
La folle histoire de Cabestan commence, en toute indépendance, à la force du poignet. Le stratège Cabestan, c’est également l’histoire d’une rencontre entre Jean-François Ruchonnet et Timothy Bovard, deux hommes qui partagent la même vision : celle de centrer l’entreprise sur la créativité poussée à l’extrême, des designs audacieux et la réalisation des rêves de leur clientèle ultra-exclusive.
En 2009, Jean-François Ruchonnet s’associe ainsi avec Timothy Bovard, un Américain aux multiples talents reconnus dans le monde des affaires.
Professeur à l’INSEAD, spécialisé dans le rachat et le développement d’entreprises, Timothy Bovard a su faire, d'une simple imprimerie de livres française rachetée en 1996, le leader européen du secteur : CPI, un groupe qui compte aujourd’hui 15 usines et 4’000 employés réalisant €500 millions de chiffre d’affaires.
Aujourd’hui propriétaire de Cabestan, Timothy Bovard ambitionne de renforcer la marque et assurer ainsi le développement de nouvelles créations sous l’égide de Jean-François Ruchonnet. Leur association permet au créateur de se consacrer à la création et la représentation de la marque, tandis que Timothy Bovard s’occupe de la gestion et du développement de la société. Grâce à cette construction de partenariat, le créateur récolte les fruits de la propriété intellectuelle qu’il a su créer. Le maître horloger Un projet fou s’attache toujours aux plus grandes ambitions. Afin de donner vie à la création de tous les extrêmes qu’il a imaginée, Jean-François Ruchonnet se devait de s’entourer d’horlogers dotés d’un savoir-faire exceptionnel, seuls artisans capable de réaliser une pièce si complexe entièrement à la main.
Eric Coudray, que tous les collectionneurs admirent, ne pouvait dès lors que faire partie de cette formidable aventure. Séduit par le challenge que représente la Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical, le Maître horloger rassemble rapidement une équipe d’artisans chevronnés.
Le succès du fonctionnement de la Cabestan repose entièrement sur Eric Coudray. Son expertise en matière de haute horlogerie n’est plus à démontrer. C’est à son talent que l’on doit notamment le développement du célèbre Tourbillon double axe, rebaptisé Gyrotourbillon. Réputé pour son inventivité, Eric Coudray jongle avec les formes et les matières jamais encore utilisées en haute horlogerie. Avec une aisance déconcertante.
La Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical représente pour le maître horloger un formidable défi à la hauteur de son intransigeance technique et de son habileté. Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical Repoussant les limites de l’impossible, la Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical voit le jour dans l’esprit de son créateur. Jean-François Ruchonnet a la vision d’un cabestan – une pièce caractéristique des navires constituée d’un gros tambour à axe vertical sur lequel on insère un bras de levier – le winch - poussé par des hommes, autour duquel s’enroule un cordage.
De ce dispositif résulte la force nécessaire à hisser et de fait à régler la voile ou encore lever l’ancre. Fasciné par l’ingéniosité de ce mécanisme, Jean-François Ruchonnet se met à imaginer un système de remontage et de mise à l’heure d’une montre par le biais d’un winch minuscule.
Détail unique, luxe suprême, design de l’absolu, ce petit winch doit se glisser dans la boucle déployante du bracelet. Une véritable prouesse que devront réaliser les horlogers de Cabestan, qui s’inscrit dans ce concept de très haute technicité cher à la Marque.
Les prouesses technologiques, Jean-François Ruchonnet en imagine une par minute. Objet d’art rendant un hommage absolu à la belle mécanique, la Cabestan verra donc le jour avec un mouvement composé de pas moins de 1350 pièces, et transposé à la verticale.
Le challenge est lancé. Maîtriser la précision A la différence d’un mouvement horloger classique composé d’un pont et d’une platine enserrant des rouages, la difficulté majeure liée à ce concept de verticalité repose sur la nécessité de poser deux ponts. Placés à la verticale, les rouages se retrouvent en effet encadrés de part et d’autre par des étriers.
La verticalité ajoute, de fait, une nouvelle difficulté de précision. Un obstacle parfaitement maîtrisé grâce à l’expertise des meilleurs artisans spécialisés dans la fabrication de chacun des composants de la Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical. Chaque aspect de la pièce requiert une habileté particulière. A l’instar des glaces thermoformées, un élément qui, a priori, paraît simple, mais dont la forme « incohérente », les angles vifs ou encore l’étanchéité nécessitent le savoir-faire d’un artisan verrier d’une très haute technicité. Un design unique Avec l’esprit d’intransigeance qui incarne la Marque, l’ensemble des terminaisons du garde-temps sont patiemment et soigneusement réalisées à la main : perlage et anglage des ponts et platines, cerclage des roues, polissages des moulures…
Un souci du détail mis au service d’un design hors norme : la Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical est entièrement construite à la verticale afin de permettre d’offrir immédiatement au regard son mouvement sublime composé de roues, pignons et tambours. Une mécanique incroyable, adoucie par l’élégance des surfaces rhodiées ou dorées du laiton, de l’acier et de l’aluminium et sublimée par une boîte en titane brossé naturel ou noirci, en or ou en platine et pour certaines versions sertie de diamants. L'équipe Cabestan est l’une de rares jeunes marques horlogères indépendantes à pouvoir se targuer de posséder une véritable manufacture.
Afin de pallier les difficultés techniques liées à la fabrication de son garde-temps extraordinaire, Jean-François Ruchonnet a, dès l’origine du projet, vu la nécessité d’avoir sa propre manufacture.
Située à l’Orient, dans la Vallée de Joux, la manufacture Cabestan accueille une équipe de six horlogers qui, régulièrement, s’attache de nouveaux collaborateurs.
Si le design des pièces se fait depuis le siège situé à Genève, la conception, le montage et l’assemblage final des montres sont réalisés à L’Orient, dans cette micro-manufacture mise en place pour la seule fabrication de ce produit d’exception.
En relation étroite avec le siège, les prototypes sont élaborés et étudiés puis entièrement testés avant d’être fabriqués et assemblés au sein de la manufacture. Ici, les artisans de Cabestan sont équipés des outillages les plus performants et de machines que seuls les doigts les plus habiles peuvent manier. L'exptertise Grâce au travail d’équipe entre les différents départements, les composants des montres en production ainsi que les produits en phase d’élaboration sont constamment optimisés dans une recherche de perfection. Il ne faut ainsi pas loin de 1000 heures de travail pour réaliser une Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical.
Au coeur de la manufacture Cabestan, Eric Coudray transmet les valeurs de la Marque : inventivité horlogère, rigueur technique, respect intransigeant de chaque détail. La Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical est avant tout le résultant d’une ingénierie horlogère très poussée.
La combinaison de la chaîne fusée et tourbillon montée en vertical font de la Cabestan l’une des montres les plus précises au monde. Mais au-delà , toute la fabrication, les terminaisons et l’assemblage des 1352 pièces qui composent chaque montre sont entièrement réalisés à la main. A rebel. An aesthete. Attracted by exceptional mechanisms, Jean-François Ruchonnet is a truly hyperactive creator with a personality that pushes him to the limit of his dreams and desires. Fascinated by extreme sports, he loves piloting boats and airplanes, but even more so, he has become an accomplished race car driver, most recently competing in the Radical European Masters. He lives his dreams going 250 km/hour on legendary race circuits like Spa, Silverstone and Nürburgring. This passion for mechanics is at the heart of his life, and his work, and this is what has enabled him to successfully create timepieces for the most well-known names in watchmaking over the past 25 years.
His insatiable need to create led him to conceive a series of watches inspired by purely mechanical images. The concept revolves around the technological rigor found in a trilogy of mechanical universes : race cars, sailboats and airplanes. The idea rapidly evolved in the incredibly imaginative mind of Jean-François Ruchonnet: that of creating works of mechanical art reserved for the most discerning collectors of exclusive timepieces.

The amazing story of the Cabestan began, freed from tradition, free to be bold. The strategist Cabestan is also the story of a fortuitous meeting between Jean-François Ruchonnet et Timothy Bovard, two men who share a common vision: taking creativity to its absolute limit, daring to develop audacious designs and realising the dreams of an ultra-exclusive clientele.
In 2009, Jean-François Ruchonnet partnered with Timothy Bovard, an American-born entrepreneur with multiple talents proven and known in the business world. Specialised in acquistions and business development, Timothy Bovard, starting with a small French book printer acquired in 1996, built CPI into the European leader in book manufacturing with sales of nearly €500 million and 4000 employees in 15 plants across Europe. And for the past five years, he has been a adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at INSEAD, in Fontainebleau, France.
Today, as owner of Cabestan, Timothy Bovard intends to reinforce the brand and insure the development of new and exciting timepieces in partnership with Jean-François Ruchonnet. Their unique and exciting association based on the musica nd book industries, allows the creator to concentrate on designing new works of mechanical art, while Timothy Bovard assures the management and development of the business. The master watchmaker An wildly creative project always attracts those with great talent. In order to bring his extremely imaginative creations to life, Jean-François Ruchonnet needed to surround himself with a team of watchmakers of exceptional talent ; the only craftsmen capable of realising such a complex timepiece entirely by hand.
Eric Coudray, admired by collectors around the world, had to be a part of such an exciting adventure. Seduced by the technical challenge that the Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical represented, the master watchmaker quickly brought together a talented team of experienced craftsmen.
The technological success of the Cabestan rests entirely in the hands of Eric Coudray. His expertise in making exceptional timepieces is fully proven. Using his talented mind and hands, he developed the famous double-axis tourbillon, better know today as the gyrotourbillon. Reputed for his inventiveness, Eric Coudray plays with forms and materials never before used in luxury watchmaking. And this with troubling ease.
The Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical represents an incredible challenge for the master watchmaker, one that is in keeping with his unwavering technical intransigence and his never ending search for perfection. And every timepiece that leaves the manufacture, does so only with his blessing. CABESTAN WINCH TOURBILLON VERTICAL Pushing back the limits of the impossible, the Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical came to life in the mind of its creator. Jean-François Ruchonnet had a vision of a capstan in his mind : a mechanical device charateristic of sailboats comprised of a large drum on a vertical axis which is hand-operated with a lever – the winch – causing a rope or chain to wrap around the drum.
From this device comes the force necessary to raise and trim the sail or lift the anchor. Fascinated by the simple ingenuity of this mechanism, Jean-François Ruchonnet imagined a system to rewind a watch movement and to set the time using a miniature winch.
A unique detail, ultimate luxury, absolute design, this tiny winch is cleverly and elegantly hidden in the deployant buckle of the watch strap. It was yet another formidable exploit that Cabestan’s watchmakers had to achieve in strict compliance with the perfection of design and technicity that defines the brand.
Amazing designs and technological innovations. Jean-François Ruchonnet imagines one per minute. A piece of fine art paying tribute to exquisite mechanical devices, the Cabestan was born with a movement composed of not less than 800 pieces, mounted vertically. The challenge was launched. Incredible precision Unlike a classical movement comprised of a plate and bridge which hold the wheels in place, the major difficulty for the Cabestan was its vertical concept that necessitated using two bridges. Positioned vertically, the wheels are in effect held in place on either side by bookends.
The vertical design, in itself, presented a number of difficulties in terms of precision. These complications were perfectly mastered by the expert craftsmen specialised in making each of the components of the Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical. Every aspect of the timepiece requires particular attention and know how. One example, the thermo-formed crystals. This element, which would appear simple at first glance, was a technological challenge given its eneven form, sharp angles, metallised edges and the need for a perfect seal, requiring highly skilled craftsmen, with years of experience in making technically complicated watch crystals.
Through incredible attention to the most minute details, the Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical is one of the most precise mechanical watches in the world. A unique design With the intransigent spirit that defines the brand, each Cabestan is hand made. The finishing of each component is also done by hand with extreme patience and care : the graining and beveling of the bridges and plates, the wheel rimming, the polishing of the mouldings, the assembly of the chain… All is done by hand in our own manufacture, by our own watchmakers.
The Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical, thanks to its vertical construction, is fascinating to observe. The design takes this fully into account with twin, curved crystals that provide spectacular 180° views of this unique and striking movement with its wheels, drums, axes and chain. An incredible mechanism rendered wonderfully elegant through the use of rhodium- and gold-plated surfaces, and the case made of natural or black PVD-coated titanium, white, red or yellow gold and platinum, with the possibility of diamond settings using a variety of cuts. The expertise The origins of watchmaking can be witnessed within the Cabestan manufacture where our timepieces are made, regulated and tested entirely by hand. And only when our matchmakers are absolutely satisfied with the quality of the watch, following an intense inspection and testing process, do they allow it to leave the manufacture.
Thanks to the teamwork of the various craftsmen who work to construct each Cabestan, the components are constantly being reviewed and refined in the search for the perfect movement. Nearly 1000 hours of work is needed to build each Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical ; proof that true luxury takes time.
At the very heart of the manufacture, Eric Coudray embodies the values of the brand: inventive watchmaking at it finest, technical rigour and uncomprosing attention to the the smallest details. The Cabestan Winch Tourbillon Vertical is the result of watch engineering and construction taken to extreme limits by the best watchmakers in the industry.
The combination of the chaine and fusée along with the vertically-mounted tourbillon, makes the Cabestan one of the most precise mechanical watches in the world. This is an amazing feat considering that all aspects of the fabrication of this watch, composed of over 800 components, is done by hand.

The acquiror can choose not only the metal used for the case and the deployant buckle, but also the colour of the wheels, bridges, plate and drums, the colour of the markings on the drums and the colour of other pieces within the movement. The back plate is equally personalisable.
This level of possible customisation enables the most demanding collectors and enthusiasts to procure a Cabestan that is truly their own.

Absolute luxury. THE MANUFACTURE Cabestan is one of the rare young independant watch brands that can claim having its own manufacture.
In order to surmount the difficulties of developing and constructing this extraordinary timepiece, Jean-François Ruchonnet, from the very beginning, saw the need to have his own team of expert watchmakers.
Situated in L’Orient, in the Vallée de Joux, in Switzerland, the manufacture has a team of eight watchmakers dedicated to making Cabestan timepieces of exacting quality and precision.
Working closely with creator Jean-François Ruchonnet, the prototypes are developed, then thoroughly tested and studied before being fabricated and assembled in the manufacture. Here, craftsmen exercise their skills using a combination of state-of-the-art technology and more traditional tools that only the most agile and experienced hands can manipulate. |
