Shanghai Gems S.A. was founded in 1989. Since its creation, the company has always maintained the idea to remain a small, but very efficient team. The company now has a team of ten people in Geneva and 3 offices: Barcelona – Spain - Valenza – Italy

From the beginning, Mr Jose Casares, one of the two founding members, has remained as close as possible to the pearls producers thus avoiding intermediaries and remaining highly competitive with prices. After many years of researches, the company now collaborates with some selected growers in Indonesia and French Polynesia. In 1999, Shanghai Gems became the largest European importer from Tahiti according to the official Tahitian export statistic.

Through these collaborations, Shanghai Gems is able to purchase entire productions. At the Geneva office the crop is sorted with rigor by quality, shape, size, color and lustre. The simplicity and systematic classification allows them to reproduce the famous pyramid diagram of the quality pearls. The company’s customers can find the pearls they need for their own market with very competitive prices. Shanghai Gems carries a very large selection from top to lower quality and all shapes and sizes.

To maintain the magnificience and beauty of each pearl, Shanghai Gems has its own workshop in Geneva. Because the company purchases directly from the sources, it is able to guarantee the lustre and the cleanness of its pearls. None of the pearls the company sells has been subjected to any chemical treatment, the only intervention is a surface polishing, which is used purely to improve its lustre. This polishing is carried out in its workshop using only natural products. The company is capable of producing any kind of necklace, from the inexpensive to the top-of-the range, or extra long for special orders.

Through its three area representatives, the company nurtures a very close relationship with its customers. Each representative leads a small but very efficient team, which reacts very quickly to any request. Because the teams are small, they generate few expenses and allow them to maintain prices close to those of their source.
